Straight answer

What should an AI agent be allowed to do?

Give it authority for one named job, then draw a line between reading, drafting, changing and sending. You should be able to name each tool it can touch, what it can do there, and the action that waits for your approval. If you cannot write that down, the job is not ready to hand off.

Write the boundary before the build

A first job you can test

Suppose the job is a morning brief. Give the agent the sources you choose and ask for a draft that cites the item behind each claim. Check the brief against real work before deciding whether it can do more. If the job involves writing back to a customer or changing a system, specify the approval step and the pass test in the written plan.
